Oresund Space Collective: West, Space and Love
"The Øresund Space Collective was formed in April 2004. It started
off as a collective of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that got together
as often as possible for free form improvised space rock music. The flavor of
the music is different with each session. The jams can often combine complex
interplay between guitar and synthesizer as well intense drumming and bass playing.
We have always had two guitar players and two or three synth players as the
core to compliment the bass and drums. The current active Collective Members
include: Tobias, on guitars and effects; Magnus, on guitars and effects; Stefan,
on guitars and effects; Jocke, on bass; Thomas, on bass; Scott, on synthesizer;

West, Space and Love was recorded between Oct 10-11, 2009, at the Space Station
Studio CPH, Copenhagen, DK. KG plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and sitar;
Dr. Space, plays synthesizers; and Love, plays Darbuka, acoustic guitar, and

West, Space and Love is one of those spacey synthesizer albums that you must
hear with headphones on to truly appreciate all of its intensity. "High
Rise" opens with cool surrounding wind effects before the soft, well-paced
drumming begins. The guitar joins in to help unveil the light buried in the
opening of the song. Simply amazing guitar playing paced perfectly with Darbuka.
Then, the magic really begins with "Kafi, (For Your Love)". There
is enough sitar here to fill volumes of air, after the exquisite, early Pink
Floyd – like, organ and synthesizer opening. Played so slowly you can
take in every note and savor its sound fully. Simply magical, but wait, there
will be more sitar!
"Spirit Blues" is excellent fluid acoustic guitar with supporting
Darbuka and spacey synth themes surrounding.
"Repetition" may sound like a bland name, but the sitar work is anything
but. Another track helping to make this album and band a great find.
"Sitars in Space" is my favorite track on the album. Just the name
itself rocks. Imagine that title and slide back in your easy chair and immerse
your senses in the near reality of experiencing it. The 'floating' sitar notes
are again calling you like Morrison's "Blue Bus".
This album is full of interesting sounds, themes, and synth instrumentation
balanced well with wonderful drum work. I'm listening to the back catalog and
picking out some new favorites already. Happy I had a chance to be introduced
to this excellent headphone music.

Jam-Gipfeltreffen im Space Station Studio von Dr. Space. KG West und Mr. Love
von der Classic Rock-Band Siena Root kamen vorbei, um Aufnahmen für das
"Glossolalia"-Album zu machen. Da weder Thomas, der Bass spielen sollte
noch Synthesizer-Mann Mogens auftauchten, jammte man ohne kompositorische Vorlagen
insgesamt fünfzehn Stücke und die besten fünf suchte man für
vorliegenden Tonträger, der auf zweihundert Exemplare limitiert ist, aus.
Bei allen Nummern darf man allerdings nicht von Space Rock sprechen, denn hier
liegt die Kraft in der Ruhe. Im Weltraum kann es folglich auch bedächtig
zugehen. Was wir hören ist live im Studio aufgenommen worden. Wenn im Informationsblatt
geschrieben wird, dass es keine Overdubs gibt, dann bestätigt auch hier
die Ausnahme die Regel. Bei "High Rise" wurde der Bass nachträglich
eingespielt. KG West hat die Nummern abgemischt und Johan Dahlström darf
man für das Mastering loben.
Selbstverständlich kann man unter der Ohrendusche den vollen Effekt der
wie auf einem Luftkissen dahingleitenden Klänge genießen. Windgeräusche
durchziehen den bereits erwähnten Opener "High Rise". Der Track
ist sozusagen die Startrampe für eine galaktische Fahrt der inneren Einkehr.
Es ist eine wahre Prozession für Space Music-Gläubige. Entspannte
Gitarren-Improvisationen werden von dezenter Darbuka-Rhythmik begleitet. Schon
im ersten Track hört man die fernöstliche Richtung, auch ohne KG West
an der Sitar.
Sanft fliegen wir mit "Kafi (For Your Love)" weiter gen Osten. Es
ist immer wieder faszinierend, wie solche Musiker in der Lage sind, traumhafte
Stimmungen zu kreieren. Selbst in relativ kleiner Besetzung wie hier, quasi
aus der Not geboren, fällt man von einer Gänsehaut in den nächsten
Entenparka. Dr. Space lässt sich von der akustischen Gitarre zu höchsten
Tönen hinreißen und dann übernimmt KG West mit seinem indischen
Instrument wieder das samtene Geschehen.
Die erste Seite der Platte wird durch "Spirit Blues" beendet. Randbemerkung:
fast hätte ich 'Sprit' geschrieben, aber bei dem Thema kann man durchaus
auch den Blues bekommen. Ja, die akustische Gitarre hat den Blues und Mr. Loves
Handtrommelspiel ist einen kleinen Tick intensiver. Wow, welch eine Jam! Es
lebe der Space-Blues eingebettet in entspannte Atmosphäre. Man mag es!
Nein, bei "Repetition" kommt wahrlich keine Langeweile auf, nur weil
im Titel von Wiederholung die Rede ist. Was Dr.Space uns an wunderschönen
Synthesizer-Ideen liefert, ist à la bonne heure. Seine Modulationen kreisen
einem im Kopf herum und hier sollte man sich unbedingt auf Mr. Loves Trommelkünste
einlassen. Herrlich, wie er mit wenig Aufwand vielfältige Klänge erzeugt.
Den Schlusspunkt setzt das längste Stück auf der Platte. Der Song-Titel
drückt schon alles aus... "Sitars In Space". Logisch, hier übernimmt
KG West den Steuerknüppel der Weltraumfähre. Die etwas andere Art
der spacigen Klänge kommt zu einem interstellaren Höhepunkt. So etwas
ist Kunst, die man so schnell irgendwo anders findet. Das sphärische "West,
Space And Love"-Luftkissen schwebt dahin und mit Leichtigkeit entführt
es den Hörer in seine persönliche Phantasiewelt. Man kann von der
manchmal harten Realität Abstand nehmen.
Selbst die Rückkehr aus den fiktiven Ebenen geschieht sehr sanft, denn
ganz am Ende stehen diese unaufdringlichen Windgeräusche, die einen herrlichen
Schlusspunkt setzen. Øresund Space Collective in Person von Dr. Space
hat es zusammen mit den Siena Root-Leuten KG West sowie Dr. Love geschafft,
den Hörer über fast fünfundvierzig Minuten auf ganz entspannt-ruhige
Art und Weise zu begeistern. "West, Space And Love" ist wie ein Flug
durch die Nacht, in der es ungemein viele Lichtblicke gibt. "West, Space
And Love" ist die Brücke, die in Traumwelten führt. Klasse!

Here we have two latest vinyl releases by Danish-Swedish instrumental improvisational space/psych/kraut band OSC. I guess our readers are already familiar with these guys since they have also played at our club on several occasions. It’s really great that the band now has a record label of their own to release their stuff and there also plans to release material by other groups.
Released in a limited edition of only 200 copies with hand-painted cover art, West, Space and Love was sold-out very quickly, but you still just might be able to hunt down a copy. At least you can download it for 10 Euros from the band’s Bandcamp site… This an exceptional OSC album because it only features three musicians: Dr. Space on synthesizers and the Siena Root guys Westman (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, sitar, bass) and Love (percussion, acoustic guitar) and it was recorded at the OSC home studio in Copenhagen in 2009. I know that they’ve had sessions like this even before that, but I believe this is the first more acoustic album release they have put out with such a tiny line-up. The music is very mystical and quite small-scale, and especially the sitar and tabla bring in lots of Eastern vibes. Scott’s synthesizers of course also take care of the spacey aspect… There are three tracks on the A side: the hypnotic “High Rise”, the rather ambient, floating ”Kafi (For Your Love)” and the acoustic guitar-driven ”Space Blues”. On side B there are two tracks: the minimal “Repetition” and the over 14-minute trip ”Sitars in Space” and the title already tells us what’s that all about… This is really meditative, great sounding and more than anything different OSC stuff so don’t expect to get any rocking stuff from this one. Beautiful.
