Øresund Space Collective- Inside Your Head

The latest release from OSC, this disc showcases what makes them so great – killer improvised space rock. As always Hawkwind is a big influence, but they seem to be stretching out, too. I hear more pure psychedelia on this release. I make out hints of The Doors at times and certainly early Pink Floyd. This is another killer disc from a band that just keeps putting out great music one jam at a time.

Track by Track Review

Substantia nigra
Dramatic, yet atmospheric elements lead us off. As it turns louder it feels like they may be about ready to launch into something akin to modern King Crimson. Instead it modulates down to a droning space rock texture and different sounds rise and fall as this carries on. I hear bits of Hendrix’ “Third Stone From the Sun” here. Then they create a true “song” type element that has both the trappings of space rock and bits of psychedelia. This rises and we get some lines of noisy guitar that call to mind Hawkwind here and there. As this is transformed into a powerhouse jam the Hawk-comparisons are more prominent. It gets quite intense at times and works through a number of changes and variations. At a little over ten minutes in length this is the second shortest track on show here. It drops down to segue into the next number.

Optic chiasm
Keyboards start this off and then we get a little psychedelia. A processed voice that’s one part helium talk, one part synthesizer and one part Donald Duck comes in, bringing a rather humorous texture while instruments wander around in the background. Sounds and motifs come again, but nothing seems ready to take root. The voice leaves and at times this feels jazzy at other points Pink Floyd comes to mind. Eventually it begins to take on a more cohesive structure and the Floyd comparisons are quite definite. They make their way through alterations and transformations, but the first six or so minutes (this is a sixteen plus minute song) are dominated by elements that call to mind early Pink Floyd. They make their way into more Hawkwind-like territory for a time, but move back outwards towards Floyd again. The two elements seem to merge later as the song rocks out harder. There is some fiery guitar soloing that just goes on and on (and I mean that in a good way) later in the track. Keyboards take over in the end and segue into the next number.

Fornix
A fast paced percussion line comes in over the remaining keyboards from the previous piece. They take a spirited solo. The keys hold in there the whole time and after a time the other instruments join. They launch out into an energized jam that makes me think of a cross (if you can picture it) between Hawkwind and Genesis. It moves more towards pure Hawklike territory as they carry forward. They work through a number of alterations and changes, but nothing veers off quickly. We get some killer guitar soloing on this one, too. There’s also some cool retro keyboard soloing at points. The bass even takes control for a while later. I hear bits of The Doors at times on this. They move out towards more purely Hawkwind territory later, but even then we get hints of reggae at times. There are also some cool echoey, rather twisted passages later. We hear more merging of Pink Floyd and Hawkwind on this here and there. It dissolves down to randomized sounding space to move into the next number.

Aqueduct of Sylvius
Elements from the previous piece start this off and they gradually bring in other things as it rises up in a dramatic and mysterious fashion. At just under ten minutes in length (epic proportions on many albums) this is the shortest number on show here. It turns pretty weird and rather dissonant as it carries forward. After a minute plus percussion enters and seems about to steer us into more “song” oriented territory. It’s obvious, though, that the other elements don’t want to give up their control just yet. We’re past the two minute mark before it launches out into the first real rocking movement. This is again quite like Hawkwind. At times there are Eastern tones to this music. Eventually this shifts towards keyboard dominated for a time, feeling a bit like The Doors. Then they move it back out to a more guitar driven space rock and there is some killer instrumental work. Around the seven minute mark this becomes a real powerhouse. Around the eight and a half minute mark lines of keyboards work melody over the top and I’m reminded of Levitation era Hawkwind. It fades down to segue into the next number.

Vermis
At over twenty minutes in length this is the epic of this collection of epics. Keyboard elements from the previous number start us off in a dramatic, mysterious sounding motif that has bits of Eastern music in them. As it works through this shifts more towards science fiction film sounds and bass guitar begins a slow pattern to drive it. Guitar joins and the track begins to take on elements of 1960’s psychedelia. As this carries forward it’s certainly another place where you might think of The Doors. They wander in this format for quite a while. Different elements take the fore here and there. At times you will hear Hawkwind, but at other times more purely psychedelic bands come to mind. Early Pink Floyd seem again to be an influence here. It’s not until around the six minute mark that they launch into any real rocking motifs. They do this with a killer jam that’s really very much in the mode of Pink Floyd. This even gets a little funky at times. We get some more extended guitar soloing that just plain rocks. Keyboards lead us down some cool paths further down this musical highway. They drop it down for a more staccato grind that has vintage Hawkwind written all over it. They bring it back up and continue down an organic musical path. It eventually makes its way back down to more pure space to end.

Jetzt wächst zusammen, was zusammen gehört«, ist man geneigt zu sagen, denn Dave Schmidt mit seinem Label Sulatron Records und das Øresund Space Collective sind kongeniale Partner.
Der Bandname ist Programm. Die Truppe, 2004 gegründet, kommt aus der Region Øresund, also der Meerenge zwischen Dänemark und Schweden. Soweit sind wir noch auf der Erde. Teil zwei des Bandnamens ist wörtlich zu nehmen, denn spacig es geht zu, beim Kollektiv.
Die Fakten: Fünf Tracks bei 70 Minuten Spielzeit. Drei Space-Gitarristen und gar vier Musiker mit Synthesizer. Und ohne Vorlauf legen die Jungs los mit einem spacigen, treibenden Jam. Quasi ohne Warnung schiebt sich der Raumkreuzer aus dem Planetenschatten und legt 'ne hohe Warp-Stufe ein. Die Synthies machen genau das, wozu sie designt sind und die Gitarren begleiten. Im Gegensatz zur gleichnamigen Platte, die Kollege Olli vor zwei Jahren in den Fingern hatte, ist "Optic Chiasm" durchaus auch eine psychedelische Spielart zu attestieren. Dicht und atmosphärisch das Grundgerüst des Tracks, die Gitarre im rechten Kanal versprüht aber eine durchs Wah Wah-Pedal gejagte Psychedelic-Sequenz. Links verstärkt durch ein nicht minder abgehobenes, aber ruhiger spielendes Pedant. Aus der imaginären Stereomitte wabern und rollten die Synthies, der Bass sowie ein fast shuffelndes Schlagzeug.
Der Grundtenor beider Alben ist aber gleich: Hinsetzen, Kopfhörer anschnallen, genießen und am besten in einem Weltall-Bildband versinken und sich treiben lassen. Die 'rechte Gitarre' sägt nun auch oberhalb der Exosphäre... und die linke auch. Man möchte mit auf die interstellare Reise, ja die Musik weckt fast süchtig machende Gelüste. Das Artwork übrigens ist passend gewählt, denn es zeigt Bilder vom MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) des menschlichen Gehirns. Auch die Tracknamen stehen für Bereiche des Gehirns. Wahrscheinlich sogar die, die gerade bei mir auf Hochtouren laufen.
Es ist schon irre, wie die Gitarrenphalanx zusammenarbeitet und eine Saitenorgie fabriziert, die schwindelig macht. Nicht der Geschwindigkeit wegen, sondern weil dieser Space Jam wie aus einem Guss daherkommt und schwerelos durch die Luft sirrt und schwingt.
"Inside Your Head" ist das vierte offizielle Werk der Skandinavier. Die Aufnahmen, die zu hören sind, stammen allerdings von den Aufnahmesessions zur dritten CD, "The Black Tomato". Aus diesen Teilen hat Dave Schmidt diesen »fließenden, 70 minütigen Trip gebastelt«.
Fließend, schwebend, treibend... das ist korrekt, aber »gebastelt« klingt mir zu sehr amateurhaft. Das Ergebnis ist perfekt und ebenso perfekt auch die Professionalität der improvisiert aufspielenden Musiker. Es ist auch unmöglich diese Art von Musik bis ins kleinste Detail zu planen. Wie das in Kollektiven üblich ist, weiß jeder was zu tun ist, was passt und wie man zusammen arbeitet, um am Ende eine gemeinschaftliche 'Arbeit' abzuliefern.
Fast getragen und mit einem irren Groove präsentiert sich der Grundrhythmus von "Fornix". Die Tasten des Rhodes ergänzen sich prächtig mit den zirpenden und zischenden Synthesizern. Umgarnt von Gitarren agiert das Schlagwerk präzise und Takt angebend. Elektronische Geräusche fliegen vorbei, haben aber nicht die Macht, die wie stoisch arbeitenden Drums und den Bass auch nur annähernd zu erschüttern. "Aqueduct Of Sylvius" ist Space-Galopp in Reinkultur. Egal welches Instrument - alles treibt den Sternenkreuzer nach vorne. Im Prinzip hätten die fünf Nummern auch eine sein können. Sind sie irgendwie auch, denn vom Konzept her ist die Musik von Øresund Space Collective so weit weg von konventionellem Songwriting wie die Erde vom OGLE-TR-56b.
Der musikalische Wahnsinn dauert einundzwanzig Minuten und heißt "Vermis". Dieses spacige Psychomonster schwebt von links nach rechts, ist in gemächlichem Tempo gehalten und vermag den Hörer in einen Bewusstseinszustand irgendwo zwischen wach sein und Traum zu versetzen. Setzt man den Fokus aufs Grundgerüst von Bass und Drums, ist es ein Erlebnis, die vorbeihuschende Elektronik oder die wie aus dichtem Nebel kommenden Gitarren zu erfassen, zu genießen und wieder 'verschwinden zu hören'. Da wird in einem Kanal spacig soliert, während aus dem andern Lautsprecher sägende Riffs ertönen und plötzlich ist es genau umgekehrt. Gleichzeitig bringen die Synthesizer Weltall-Feeling und herrje - damit könnte man Menschen hypnotisieren. "Inside Your Head": Genau, ich habe zwar keine Ahnung, welche Regionen durch die Musik angesprochen werden, aber dass sie es werden ist spürbar. Was für ein geiler Trip!

This CD includes five tracks (70 minutes) of material by this Danish/Swedish psychedelic and improvisational space rock group from the same studio sessions that gave birth to their excellent Black Tomato album. We are not talking about any left-over tapes here, since there was a lot of great material in the 150 minutes that were not used. Sula Bassana alias Dave Schmidt from Sulatron also made a big job by combining shorter jams into lengthier tracks and manipulating the music a bit. The end result is a superb, mind-expanding CD and all the tracks are suitably named according to sections of the human brain…

”Substantia Nigra” starts off with a hypnotic bass line and the drums join in after a minute and a half while guitars grow gradually in a nice way. The great drive and suction is maintained for the whole duration of the track and this is really cerebral stuff! Not that heavy track. “Optic Chiasm” begins in a pretty ambient way and starts to take form little by little. It’s rather serene and slow until the end bringing to mind some of the more peaceful Ozric Tentacles numbers. It has some great soloing as well as electric piano. The danceable “Fornix” begins with groovy, possibly looped drums and works very well while the bass and synthesizers join in the fun. Later on they switch for a reggae beat and we get to hear interesting UFO sounds and plenty of delay. This track causes a very pleasant, little tingling sensation in your brain. ”Aqueduct of Sylvius” continues directly after the previous number at first with some small psychedelic sounds. The rhythm fades in and we get to hear some very spacey stuff. At around the seven-minute-marker the going gets tighter and heavier. What an excellent number! The over 20-minute-long “Vermis” begins with a synthesizer and then bass and some small-scale, floating guitar is added to the mix. Later on there is some drums as well. This one has a truly drugging effect. At around the five-minute-marker another jam section is apparently inserted, and the going gets jazzy and funky in a nice way. We can hear both a guitar and a Fender Rhodes solo. The rest of the track is quite guitar-driven, and the solo somewhere in 17 to 19 minutes is really amazing!

ØSC has yet again made an excellent CD that has plenty of stuff to journey into and wonder about. The album’s brain theme has also been used in the covers and it suits the package very well. Their next album is already mixed by Steve Hayes from Secret Saucer but still needs some editing. It’s too bad that the band’s Helsinki gig this year had to be cancelled, but let’s have another try next year since these guys really know how to feed the brains of their listeners!

Thank you for lifting off with the Øresund Space Collective, einem aus der skandinavischen Region um den Øresund, aus Kopenhagen und Malmö stammenden Space-Rock- und Jam-Band-Kombinat. Die Aufnahmen sind komplett improvisierte Jams, die während der Aufnahmen zur inzwischen vergriffenen CD "The Black Tomato" entstanden. Sulatron-Labelchef Dave Schmidt hat aus den Aufnahmen - in seinen eigenen Worten - einen fließenden, 70-minütigen Trip gebastelt.
Und tatsächlich lässt sich beim Belauschen der fünf zehn- bis zwanzigminütigen Klangströme ein angenehm "abgehobener" Zustand erreichen. Das Artwork unterstützt den Trip mit Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Aufnahem des menschlichen Gehirns, die Songtitel nehmen auf einzelne Gehirnbereiche Bezug. Pflicht für Medizinstudenten also! Und nicht nur für die...

Inside your Head ist ein weiteres Album aus den Sessions, die am 10./11. November 2006 im Black Tornado-Studio in Kopenhagen stattfanden. Bereits auf dem Album The Black Tomato war 2007 eine Auswahl der nach damaligem Urteil besten Teile der Jams veröffentlicht worden. Aber das, was von Dave Schmidt (Sulatron-Records) aus den übrigen 150 Minuten zu einer etwa 70 minütigen Spacerock-Reise kondensiert worden ist, steht dem auf Black Tomato veröffentlichten Material in nichts nach. Wieder gibt es improvisierten Spacerock zu hören, wobei Improvisation nicht für besonders Schräges steht, sondern für einen relaxt wabernden, manchmal spacig quietschigen, sich langsam entfaltenden Sound. Teils klingt es retro, teils aber auch angemessen modern. Gleichförmig sind die Stücke untereinander auch keineswegs, sondern mal geht es flott rockig ab (Substantia Nigra), mal sehr, sehr entspannt und um Struktur ringend (Optic Chiasm) oder einfach im Midtempo cool vorwärtstreibend (Vermis). Es klingen immer wieder die alten Vorbilder wie Pink Floyd, Hawkwind oder auch Manfred Mann's Earth Band zur Zeit von Solar Fire durch, aber geklont wird beim Space Collective aus dem Oresund nicht. Die ineinander fließenden Stücke sind allesamt lang - zwischen knapp 10 und über 20 Minuten. Da bleiben manchmal auch Längen nicht aus, außer man lässt sich einfach mit dem Fluss der Musik davontragen. Und wenn man sich genau darauf einlässt, dann bietet das Album einen wirklich gelungenen musikalischen Trip inside your head.

Nebenbei: Haltet mal die Cover von Inside your Head vom OSC und Dedicated to you, but you weren't listening von der Keith Tippett Group aus dem Jahr 1971 nebeneinander...!

Sulatron-Records er en østeriksk label som spesialiserer seg på spacerock, flytrock og annen psykedelisk relatert musikk. Inside Your Head er fjerde album i rekken fra ØSC
og deres spesialitet er instrumental, total-improvisert spacerock. Det som er litt spesielt med denne utgivelsen er at alt materialet stammer fra den samme studiosesjonen som
forrige utgivelse. Vi snakker om to intense døgn i studio med kosmisk jamming i en fjern galakse med mye hinsidig galaktisk samspill, i edru tilstand og andre tilstander...
Musikken spenner fra mer heavy spacerock-utskeielser til mer meditative og ambiente øyeblikk, ispedd visse jazzete og dub-aktige elementer.De mest umiddelbare referansene
kan trekkes til band som Ozric Tentacles og 80/90-talls Hawkwind. Alt i alt nok en spennende utgivelse fra ØSC. Innspillingen vitner om fet innsikt og bandkjemi innenfor det landskapet
de orienterer seg innenfor, og inneholder mange stimulerende utflukter. Utgivelsen henvender seg i stor grad til dedikerte spacerock-fans, og lyttere som liker å bli tatt med på en
reise gjennom musikken. Når det er sagt kan det legges til at det hjelper å være litt fanatisk, for 70 minutter med totalimprovisert musikk kan nok bli litt drøy kost for mange, selv for
spacerock-interesserte. Det er godt man kan velge sjæl hvor lenge trippen skal vare!

What would it sound like if you put Pink Floyd together with The Ozric Tentacles into a wind tunnel and ask them to start jamming? What would it sound like if this jam would be conducted by Frank Zappa? Well, the sound created by this weird combination would be pretty close to the sound created by The Oresund Space Collective. This Scandinavian band is a group of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that get together as often as possible to start jamming and create a free form of improvised instrumental and cosmic music. This psychedelic music is a bizarre mix of jazz, funk, reggae, kraut, stoner, world, electronic and space rock. Sometimes the cosmic soundscapes by The Oresund Space Collective come pretty close to the trippy music of the Ozrics. The tracks on the “Inside Your Head” album are all “leftovers” from their previous album “Black Tomato”. The tracks on the “Inside Your Head” album are all named after specific areas in the brain. And that’s exactly what this music tries to do with you. It slowly creeps into your mind, creates a rollercoaster of emotions and prepares you for a long spacey, trippy and mind expanding experience. This trip with some great guitars, weird synths, driving beats and pumping baselines most probably will not please all of you. If you did not like their previous releases, you will surely not like this one either. Me, for myself I did not yet make my mind up: is this my kind of music or not? I simply don’t know yet. Anyway, a more kraut, trippy, psychedelic and weird release, will be hard to find this year. I would strongly advise you to check out the band’s my space page, before buying this album.

Le cerveau reste une source intarissable de fascination : comment fonctionne-t-il, utilise-ton toutes ses capacités, pourra-ton le greffer un jour ? Et sa topographie est aussi mystérieuse que ses pouvoirs. En interprétant un scanner, on voyage autant que qu’en regardant Thalassa, les mots nous parlent, on s’imagine volant vers quels rivages obscurs… Fornix, Sylvius, Chiasma optique où se croisent tant d’informations, étranges noms incitant au départ. Coïncidence heureuse, les Suédois d’Øresund Space Collective à défaut de jouer les neurologues de pointe, savent comment vous vriller l’encéphale avec leurs déambulations sous hallucinogènes. Leurs armes : une rythmique infaillible, un son pur, des bruitages dignes des grands fonds océaniques (« Substantia Nigra ») et des improvisations interminables de guitare. Un croisement entre le psychédélisme, Pink Floyd et une musique électronique en acier, compacte et inéluctable. La formule ne change pas d’un iota depuis les précédents disques. Les points forts : une production de qualité et une vraie capacité à envoyer l’auditeur dans le cosmos demeurent présent. Certes cette musique ne se dissèque et ne s’admire pas. Il s’agit juste d’un immense shoot inoffensif destiné à qui voudrait oublier le morne quotidien et aller nager avec les éléphants de mer et les baleines à bosse quelque part, très loin de chez lui, dans l’espace, là ou rien n’a plus vraiment d’importance, surtout pas une inspiration artistique quelconque. Bon voyage aux candidats potentiels.

Vorliegen tut mir das vierte Album der experimentellen und meditativ improvisierenden Dänen
und Schweden, die sich zum ÖRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE zusammen geschlossen haben.

Wer einmal die Gelegenheit hat, von Malmö nach Kopenhagen über die Öresundbron zu fahren,
das ist die lange und natürlich leider kostenpflichtige Brücke, die dann in einen Tunnel übergeht,
an dessen anderem Ende man in Dänemark auftaucht, am besten in einer sternklaren
Mittsommernacht, sollte das tun, seine Musik sorgfältig auswählen und die Fahrt genießen.

Alternativ hierzu kann man auch einfach die Augen schließen, sich absolut zu diesem
akustisch dargestellten Trip entspannen und sich vorstellen, unter dem nächtlichen Firmament
dahinzugleiten. Wenn man sich wirklich darauf einlässt funktioniert es bei diesen Klängen
übrigens auch komplett ohne weitere Stimulantien.

Wer Bands wie CAN und HAWKWIND hört, sollte diesem Album, das im Black
Tornado Studio(Kopenhagen) von Hendrik Udd während der Enstehung des vorherigen Albums
"The Black Tomato" parallel aufgenommen wurde, eine reelle Chance geben.
Gemischt wurde das Klangkunstwerk dann in den Nacksving Studios in Göteborg und
letztlich von Dave Schmidt in diesen 70 Minuten langen akustischen Rausch verwandelt.

Dieses Album ist eine wirklich gelungene einzige Improvisation, die ineinander überfließende
Spacegitarrenparts mit teils jazzigen Bassläufen kombiniert, einiges erinnert hier spontan an
OZRIC TENTACLES. Gitarrensoli mit Wahwah leiten Rhythmen ein, zu denen dann die Drums
einsetzen, sich ein weicher melodischer Basslauf dazu gesellt, es entstehen ständig neue
Klanggebilde.
Da es unglaublich schwierig ist, derartige lange Improvisationen in Worten zu beschreiben,
seien an dieser Stelle die Musiker und ihre Instrumente erwähnt, denn diese Art von Musik
lässt sich nur durch wirklich offenes und von Störfaktoren freies Hören erleben.
Auffällig ist die technische Virtuosität der einzelnen Instrumente, es gibt immer wieder
Passagen, in denen Drums oder auch Bassläufe kurzfristig das Leadinstrument sind.

ÖRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE wurde von dem in Kopenhagen lebenden US-Bürger
Scott Heller im Jahre 2004 gegründet, und auf diesem Album wirken folgende Musiker mit:

Freude an diesem Album haben.

Auch auf dem vierten Album des Space Rock Kollektivs aus dem hohen Norden hat sich inhaltlich nicht sehr viel verändert. Hier wird gejammt, in fremde Sphären aufgebrochen
und dies alles ohne jegliche zeitliche Beschränkung– man nimmt sich einfach die benötigte Zeit. Der jeweilige Trip ist eben genau dann zu Ende, wenn die Skandinavier
aus Kopenhagen und Malmö meinen, ein gemeinsames Ziel erreicht zu haben.Die Songs auf „Inside your head“ entstanden bereits bei den Aufnahmen zur dritten CD „Black Tomato“- Psychedelic
Urgestein Dave Schmidt und Label Owner von Sulatron Records bastelte daraus einfach einen knapp 70-minütigen sphärischen Flug durch die unendlichen Weiten aus Raum und Zeit.

Hier geht es um ein gemeinsames Lebensgefühl, das Schweben durch ferne, unbekannte Welten. Auch wenn der rein improvisierte Space Rock vor allem auf
wiederkehrende, hypnotische Rhythmen baut und dabei von seiner geradezu monotonen, aber überaus effektvollen Eigendynamik lebt, also quasi seit mehr als 30 Jahren nicht
viel an den musikalischen Zutaten verändert wurde, so funktioniert auch diese Reise auf ihre ganz eigene Weise. Dies liegt daran, dass die spacigen Nordländer ihr Handwerk
verstehen und nach jahrelangem Zusammenspiel einfach eine geheime, eigene Formel gefunden haben, die überzeugend aus den Boxen drängt. Während der Vorgänger mit über 30-minütigen Space Jams
aufwartete, sind die freakigen Fragmente auf „Inside your head“, trotz übergangsloser Zusammenfügung, etwas mehr auf den Punkt gebracht. So quietscht und zirpt es, merkt
man bisweilen, dass hier nicht alles konsequent zu Ende gedacht wurde. Trotzdem; wenn sich nicht gestorben sind, dann fliegen sie noch heute… und mit einer Fortsetzung ist
